Candidates who want to take the exam find it difficult to accurately determine their level of language proficiency. Experts in the Language Policy of the Council of Europe have developed the European Framework of Reference for Languages which can be helpful in the initial assessment of the level of linguistic competence of candidates for certification exams.

Language proficiency scales are a reference point for assessing language proficiency according to examination requirements. This way, candidates can get an idea of what they should already know in order to take the exam at a given level.
